Vice-Minister K. Vaitiekūnas in Moldova: EU enlargement is an investment in European security

On 8 October, Lithuania’s Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs Kristupas Vaitiekūnas participated in the Moldova Security Forum in Chisinau, where he highlighted the importance of EU enlargement for European security and stability.

In his address, the Vice-Minister emphasised that Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and intensifying hybrid attacks against Moldova demonstrate the need to strengthen European security, while the integration of Ukraine and Moldova into the EU is a strategic interest of Europe as a whole.

“Small states have no future without the rule of law and freedom; there is no freedom or rule of law without Europe, and there is no Europe without security. Ultimately, there will be no security and stability on our continent without EU enlargement,” said K. Vaitiekūnas.

The Vice-Minister also outlined the priorities of Lithuania’s Presidency of the Council of the EU in 2027, including EU enlargement, strengthening European defence readiness, closer EU–NATO cooperation, and ensuring long-term support for Ukraine. He reaffirmed Lithuania’s continued support for Moldova’s European integration and efforts to strengthen its resilience.

The Moldova Security Forum, held for the third time, brings together policymakers and international experts to discuss European security challenges and prospects for regional cooperation.
