New collection of testimonies: "Archives of Memory" look into history of 1950s

Scientific conference “Operation Sever/North. Deportation of Jehovah’s Witnesses from the Moldavian SSR” dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the April 1951 deportations and to the memory of the victims of the totalitarian-communist regime was organized by Moldovan Institute of History, Department of Contemporary History, in cooperation with the State University “Alecu Russo” of Balti and the State University “Bogdan Petriceicu Hasdeu” of Cahul on April 1, 2021.

On April 1, 1951, the Soviet structures of repression launched the Operation "Sever" toward the “anti-Soviet” and “hostile” confessional communities, deporting 2617 people from 14 districts and 92 localities of the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic.

At the conference, a new volume of book collection “Archives of Memory”, edited by the Institute of History in cooperation with the State University “Alecu Russo” of Balti, containing documents and testimonies of deported people was presented.

The field research and publication of testimonies and documents were carried out with the support of the Development Cooperation and Democracy Promotion Programme of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania.
