LITHUANIA THANKS MOLDOVA FOR THE RECOGNITION OF THE INDEPEDENCE TWENTY YEARS AGO
On May 31 the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania commemorated the 20th anniversary of the Re-establishment of the Independence and the 20th anniversary of Recognition of Independence of the Republic of Lithuania by the Supreme Council of the Republic of Moldova. Lithuanian ambassador Violeta Motulaitė highlighted that Moldova was the first country in the former Soviet Union which recognized the Independence of Lithuania.
“Moldova is rightly proud of this brave and foresighted step that reflects Moldavian people’s historic strive and love for freedom,” said V.Motulaitė.
20 years ago, in the telegram, addressed to the former Chairman of the Supreme Council Mr. Mircea Snegur, Lithuanian leader Vytautas Landsbergis wrote: “I trust that in the nearest future our two states will cooperate as independent, equal partners and members of the European community.”
In his speech the first Moldavian President M.Snegur stressed that during the times of national movements “we took courage one from each other, especially from Lithuania, which today remains an important partner on Moldova’s Eurointegration way.”
The representatives of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Moldova, who voted to recognize the Independence of Lithuania, signatories of Lithuania’s Declaration of Independence Petras Vaitiekūnas and Vladimir Jarmolenko, Moldova’s Vice-Prime Minister Victor Osipov, Minister Veaceslav Negruta, Cabinet member Mihail Formuzal, and other guests and friends of Lithuania participated at this festive occasion.
