Exhibition “Lithuanian Tatars in Archival Documents” on Display in Soroca
On February 4, the exhibition “Lithuanian Tatars in Archival Documents” dedicated to the history and culture of Tatar people in Lithuania was opened at the Museum of History and Ethnography in Soroca.
The exhibition presents documents reflecting the history of Lithuanian Tatars from the second half of the 16th century to this day. Tatars settled in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania more than 600 years ago, and their immigration was stimulated by the excellent conditions: freedom of religion and customs was ensured, construction of mosques was allowed, and the rights of noble Tatars were equated with those of Lithuanian nobility. In Lithuania, the Tatars preserved their customs, religion and culture.
The exhibition is prepared by the Lithuanian State Historical Archive and complemented by a Lithuanian TV documentary about Tatar traditions and the present. It will be on display till the end of February.
The organizers of the exhibition in Soroca are the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania to the Republic of Moldova in partnership with the Institute of History of the Republic of Moldova. Last year, the exhibition was shown at the National Museum of History of Moldova in Chisinau as well as in Comrat, Gagauzia.
