Exhibition "Children of Gulag" in Chisinau

An exhibition of documents entitled “Children of the Gulag” was opened at the National History Museum of the Republic of Moldova, which testifies to the fate of Moldovan children in exile during the Stalinist regime.

The exhibition, which reflects the lives of Bessarabian children in Siberia, Kazakhstan and other places of exile, is dedicated to the memory of all those who suffered the atrocities of the Soviet totalitarian regime. In 1941, 1949 and 1951, the Soviet authorities deported almost 20,000 children from Bessarabia.

The exhibition features about 180 documents collected over the past 10 years by the author of the exhibition, historian Dr. Ludmila Cojocaru from the archives of exiled Bessarabia families, as well as from museums in the Republic of Moldova.

The opening of the exhibition was attended by historians, deportees and their descendants, as well as students from Vasile Alecsandri High School in Chisinau.

The preparation of the exhibition was supported by the Lithuanian Development Cooperation and Democracy Promotion Programme.
