Day of Freedom Defenders commemorated in Chisinau
On January 13, Lithuania marks the Day of Freedom Defenders. In the Lithuanian Embassy in the Republic of Moldova, on that occasion, candles were lit in the windows in the morning. In the evening, the heads of the representations of the Baltic countries and Poland, diplomats, and the Lithuanian community gathered at a symbolic bonfire of the freedom defenders.
In 1991, on this day, there was a massive peaceful resistance of Lithuanian citizens to the Soviet leadership's attempt to seize the Vilnius TV tower by force.14 peaceful and unarmed people were killed and more than 600 were injured at the TV tower in Vilnius.
In Lithuania, in memory of the events of January 13, bonfires are lit and candles burn in windows at dawn.
