Minister L. Linkevičius and the new Canadian Ambassador discuss security situation in the region, joint projects in Ukraine
On 22 November, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius met with the new Ambassador of Canada to Lithuania Kevin Rex. He presented his letters of credence to the President of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė the day before.
"We would like to thank Canada for ensuring security in the Baltic region and for its leadership of NATO's enhanced forward presence battle group in Latvia," said the Minister L. Linkevičius.
In the meeting, the officials discussed the region‘s security situation and joint projects in Ukraine in the run-up to the 2019 Ukraine Reform Conference in Toronto.
The participants of the meeting welcomed a 31% increase in the Lithuanian-Canadian trade turnover in January-September 2018, which reached EUR 61.36 million.
Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that the country had extended its NATO commitment in the Baltic states by another four years to 2023. Canadians are traditional participants in military exercises in Lithuania and three Canadian soldiers serve in the NATO Force Integration Unit (NFIU) in Vilnius. In 2014, Canadian aircraft also participated in the Baltic Air Policing mission.
The Ambassador Kevin Rex resides in Riga. He is the ninth Canadian representative to Lithuania since 1991. He succeeded Alain Hausser as Canada's Ambassador to Lithuania in the summer.
