Lithuania allocates funds for humanitarian aid to Syria, Mali, Somalia and Guatemala
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania has allocated EUR 60, 000 for humanitarian aid, of which EUR 20, 000 to Syria will be transferred to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, while EUR 15, 000 to Mali and EUR 15, 000 Somalia will be transferred to the World Food Program. Lithuania‘s Foreign Ministry has also allocated EUR 10, 000 in humanitarian aid to the Guatemalan Government and the victims of volcanic eruptions. A catastrophic eruption of Guatemala's Fuego volcano has affected more than 1.7 million people.
The humanitarian aid allocated by Lithuania to Syrian refugees will be transferred to the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Due to the Syrian civil war, 5.6 million people have fled Syria as refugees. Children make up almost half of the refugees. In 2018, the United Nations estimated that Syria needed $ 3.513 billion in humanitarian aid.
The humanitarian aid allocated by Lithuania to Mali and Somalia will be transferred to the World Food Program. Each month, the program reaches over 1.67 million people in Somalia with food and nutrition assistance, as well as 0.35 million people in Mali. The United Nations estimated that Somalia needed $ 1.6 billion for life-saving aid, while Mali needed $ 0.329 billion.
In providing humanitarian aid, Lithuania coordinates its own actions with the humanitarian actions of the EU, UN and other humanitarian actors.
In 2018, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania already allocated EUR 245, 000 in humanitarian aid to Ukraine, Yemen, Syria, Somalia, Mali, Guatemala, Palestinian refugees and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
