Universal Periodic Review (UPR)

The Universal Periodic Review is a mechanism of the United Nations Human Rights Council that emerged in 2008. The Universal Periodic Review is aimed at improving human rights situation on the ground of each of the United Nations (UN) Member States. Human rights situation of all UN Member States is reviewed every 4-5 years. Evaluation of the situation is executed by other Member States. The Universal Periodic Review is of different nature in comparison with presentation of reports of implementation of various human rights Conventions, i.e. it is carried out by other UN Member states and not a team of experts.

On October 2011, UN Human Rights Council reviewed the first human rights report of Lithuania submitted for the Universal Periodic Review. In March 2012, during the 19th Human Rights Council session UPR Working Group's report was approved. Second human rights report of Lithuania will be reviewed in 2016.
